At around 9.45pm on Saturday, a motorist driving along Rue de la Gare in Belvaux spotted the driver of the vehicle in front of him striking his female passenger.
The two suddenly got out of the vehicle and continued fighting on the roadside. At that point, the witness stepped in and managed to pin the driver to the ground until police arrived.
Once officers were on the scene, both the driver and the passenger were taken to the station for further processing. As the driver showed signs of intoxication, a breath test was carried out and came back positive. His licence was withdrawn on the spot.
During a routine security check, a small quantity of cannabis was found on the driver and seized. On top of that, the vehicle was impounded on the orders of the public prosecutor's office, as it was not covered by valid insurance.
At around the same time, a police patrol spotted a vehicle swerving across the road on Rue de Colmar-Berg in Mersch. The driver was intercepted on the road heading towards Angelsberg. A breath test carried out during the stop also came back positive, and the driver's licence was seized.
