An incident at the Berchem service area caused disruption on the A3 towards Luxembourg on Tuesday morning, after diesel leaked from a lorry at the entrance to the site, according to a spokesperson from the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) contacted by RTL.

The service area, on the Thionville-Luxembourg side of the motorway, was first closed to heavy goods vehicles shortly before 7.30am, then to all traffic a few minutes later, before reopening to all road users shortly before 8am.

The reason was that diesel had accidentally spilled onto the road surface at the entrance to the service area, creating a serious risk of vehicles skidding. The CGDIS spokesperson explained that three CGDIS vehicles, including one equipped with special material for this type of incident, were quickly dispatched to the site.

The spokesperson added that the leak in the tank had been sealed, but that crews still have to empty the lorry's 200-litre tank, which would take some time.
