After 19 people were arrested on Saturday, businesses in the capital expected another unruly afternoon in the city centre on Sunday. However, none of the protests got out of hand and despite being present in great numbers, no police officers had to intervene at any point.
Nevertheless, business people in the city still lament fewer visitors than usual over the last two weekends. Guill Kaempff, honorary president of the Luxembourg City Business Association, commented: “Even though the police have significantly increased their presence in the capital, we can feel that about a third of our customers have not returned.”
For once, the Gare district finds itself out of the spotlight, much to the pleasure of local business people. Since all protests took place in the city centre, they remained untouched by any unrests.
Local businessman Thierry Abondance, who has worked in the Gare district for over 30 years, commented: “In fact, we actually had one single client who called yesterday to see if we were also open on Sunday, because they wanted to avoid any trouble on Saturday. Other than that, no negative impacts to report.”
