In 2025, one in every 15 employees in the private sector and the civil service admitted to having suicidal thoughts – three times as many as a decade ago. This data was obtained by the Chamber of Employees through a survey and was published on Friday in their latest "Betterwork" report.
Pressures in the professional world are increasing, resulting in a negative impact on workers' mental and physical health.
"Although this development does not necessarily mean that suicidal acts have increased to the same extent, it does point to a worrying rise in psychological strain at the workplace", the report said.
The Chamber said it could not clearly pinpoint work as the sole cause for the increase, as suicide rarely has just one trigger, but the data shows that work can just as easily harm people as it can protect them.
It called upon employers to improve working conditions and to create workplaces with better support for mental health, to keep an eye on their employees' wellbeing, and to thereby help with suicide prevention.
In Luxembourg, people struggling with suicidal thoughts can contact the SOS Détresse helpline on 45 45 45. For more information, visit www.prevention-suicide.lu.
