Yves Cruchten, president of the Luxembourg Socialist Worker's Party (LSAP), said Donald Trump and his populist presidency to date had torn the American people apart, and said they needed a leader who would reunite them once more.

A Biden victory and a return to multilateralism would be good for the USA and good for the rest of the world, said Cruchten - a view which was shared by Claude Wiseler, MP for the Christian Social People's Party (CSV).

Wiseler said the US had withdrawn from the world stage, leaving space for countries like China to step into the void left behind. He hoped that Joe Biden would help to bring the US back into the fold, by radically changing US politics.

On the other hand, Fernand Kartheiser, MP for the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (adr) and former diplomat, refrained from choosing a favourite to win the election, saying he had faith in both candidates and in American democracy. He said neither posed a threat to the democratic culture in the US, although he acknowledged it was a very different situation to Luxembourgish politics.
