On the groundEmergency services continue to work during pandemic crisis

RTL Today
4,500 firefighters, 1,500 police officers and more than 10,000 nurses and nursing assistants must continue to carry out their work despite the coronavirus crisis.

While Luxembourg's streets are empty and the majority of the population are staying at home, key workers in the emergency services cannot do the same. How are they protecting themselves in the midst of such a difficult situation?

Christiane Koetz of HELP explained they were adapting to the circumstances, as police, fire fighters and nurses cannot follow the rules of confinement.

Security measures were put in place during the early stages to ensure the service could be guaranteed for as long as possible.

Although hygiene is always a priority in the health professions, the measures have been reinforced.

It is not just the healthcare sector which must continue to function during the epidemic, however.

The population must be kept safe in cases of accidents and fires.

General director of the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps, Paul Schroeder, explained special measures were in place to ensure the maximal number of professional and volunteer fire fighters are prepared for intervention.

The CGDIS employs a number of specialists who must be kept protected as there are no replacements.

Luckily, the situation in Luxembourg is calm at present. Fewer people are on the roads, which has led to fewer accidents. Despite this, the emergency services are prepared for all eventualities.

Some services have been reduced in order to allow for maximum protection across the nation. The first responder services in the municipalities has been suspended as it proved difficult to maintain the necessary protective measures.

However, the suspension is partially offset by the higher number of ambulances in circulation.

This is similar to the healthcare sector, in which some services have also been reduced to increase availability in other departments.

The situation is evaluated on a daily basis, and it is currently difficult to predict when circumstances will return to normal.

Nevertheless, the aim is to ensure that emergency aid can be guaranteed at all times.
