Prosecutors have confirmed that it is "very likely" a homeless man who died in a courtyard in Luxembourg City's Gare district on Saturday, 20 June, succumbed to the consequences of extreme heat. However, the public prosecutor's office also clarified that the precise cause of death cannot be determined with absolute certainty.
When the 75-year-old's body was found on Rue de Strasbourg two months ago, the impact of the heatwave was immediately discussed as a potential factor in his death. The hypothesis of hyperthermia as the cause of death has now been confirmed by the prosecution, following the conclusion and analysis of the autopsy.
According to earlier reports from June, a police patrol had passed by the man as he slept in direct sunlight during the afternoon but did not intervene, as there appeared to be no immediate health issues or emergency at first glance. Later that same evening, officers were called back to the scene, where the man was found dead.
