The mayor of Esch-sur-Alzette announced the deadline on Monday evening in Nonnewisen, during the laying of the foundation stone for a residence which will consist of 20 apartments and 17 single-family homes in the "Wunnen am Park" district.
The development of the Nonnewisen site started in 2003. The municipal authorities planned to transform the 28 hectare surface into a mixed neighbourhood with more than 750 dwellings in total. The Housing Fund has already put four residences and a hundred houses on the market.
Diane Dupont, president of the board of directors of the Fund, thanked the municipal authorities of Esch-sur-Alzette for their collaboration on Monday.
The name of the district, "Wunnen am Park", which translates to "living in the park", hails from the plans to install many gardens and green spaces between buildings, according to Jacques Vandivinit, the director of the Housing Fund.
The director of the Fund added that the demand for bedrooms was increasing in the case of houses.
For the mayor of Esch-sur-Alzette, Georges Mischo, the diversity of the district, with a school, a crèche, cafes and shops, will be essential, especially when housing prices are ever rising. He highlighted the importance of affordable housing, and said they would be proud of the Nonnewisen "success story".
The cost of the project amounts to around 9.4 million euros for the residence and 9.9 million for the houses. Half was subsidised by the Ministry of Housing.
