The goldcrest has been named Luxembourg's bird of the year 2027, winning the first public vote organised by natur&ëmwelt. Until now, the winner was always selected by ornithologists, but this year, they were only responsible for creating a shortlist, before the vote was put to the general public.
Known as the "Dommendéck" in Luxembourgish, "Wintergoldhähnchen" in German, "Roitelet huppé" in French and "Regulus regulus" in Latin, the goldcrest measures just nine centimetres from the tip of its golden head to the end of its tail. It weighs just 5 grams and is the smallest bird in Europe. But despite its diminutive size, the bird possesses a strong, clear, high call, and its song can easily be heard from the tops of the trees in which it resides.
The goldcrest will feature on the next print of stickers created by the nature organisation. In 2027, natur&ëmwelt will dedicate time to advocating for healthy mixed forests, which the goldcrest needs for its habitat.
