Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie met residents and staff at the Beim Goldknapp care home in Erpeldange-sur-Sûre on Monday.
The visit focused on how best to care for people who become increasingly dependent on others as a result of dementia, and on the importance of personal, individual care.
Accompanied by Family Minister Max Hahn, the couple toured the facility, which is run by the Association Luxembourg Alzheimer (ALA) and specialises in supporting people with dementia and other neurocognitive disorders.
The visit was less formal than many official engagements, with the emphasis on direct contact.
The Grand Duke and Grand Duchess took time to talk to residents and listen to staff, and it quickly became clear how much attention and individual care is needed to ensure that those affected can lead a daily life suited to their needs.
The couple were also given an insight into the "oasis de soins" unit designed for people whose condition has reached an advanced stage.
Both the surroundings and the care provided there are specially adapted to residents’ circumstances.
The visit also showed that dementia care goes well beyond conventional nursing. Alongside medical treatment, human relationships, a sense of security, and respect for each resident’s individuality all play a crucial role.
This was not the couple’s first visit focused on older people, as such engagements have been part of their official programme since 2021.
In Erpeldange-sur-Sûre, however, particular attention was paid not only to the residents but also to those who care for them every day.
