Minister of Home Affairs Léon Gloden's appearance at Luxembourg-Gare wearing a bulletproof vest drew significant public attention and prompted a parliamentary question from MP Dan Biancalana of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP).
In his written response, Gloden explained that on the night of 14 July, after 10pm, he accompanied a police patrol in the Gare district under real-life conditions, stating that had the patrol been called out to an incident, he would have joined them. For this reason, and following advice from both police officers and his security staff, he wore a protective vest, he said.
According to Gloden, wearing such a bulletproof vest is a precaution recommended to anyone taking part in a police patrol.
Biancalana also asked why Luxembourg City Mayor Lydie Polfer, who joined the patrol, did not wear a protective vest.
While Gloden did not address this specific case directly, he clarified that anyone accompanying police officers during an unexpected or potentially dangerous intervention is exposed to the same risks as the officers themselves.
According to Gloden, it is ultimately up to each individual to decide whether to wear a protective vest. However, as the minister responsible for the police, he stated that he naturally followed the police's instructions.
