Jean AsselbornHope for Biden if postal votes are counted

RTL Today
Jean Asselborn, Minister for Foreign Affairs, was RTL Radio's guest on Wednesday morning, in the wake of the US presidential election.

Asselborn commented that if the postal votes are counted, there would still be a small chance for Biden to win.

If the votes of 100 million people would not be taken into account at all, it would be serious, according to the head of Luxembourgish diplomacy. At any rate, the elections did not happen the way pollsters had predicted.

Asselborn emphasised that a transatlantic friendship would most certainly not be rebuilt overnight, even with a president like Biden. However, a Democrat in the White House would present an opportunity for a U-turn on key subjects, such as Iran, climate agreements, or punitive taxes. Should Donald Trump be re-elected, trust will be broken and all hope would be lost.

Europe must in any case know that 'big brother' is no longer holding its hand. That is why Europeans must defend their values themselves and unite, regardless of the new President, said the minister.

The elections showed that the US is deeply divided. Many Americans see Donald Trump in a completely different light than the majority of Europeans, according to Asselborn.
