Luxembourg Airport is expecting around 5.7 million passengers this year, including 1.2 million during the summer months – a 13.5% increase compared with last summer – as it rolls out a series of upgrades aimed at improving the passenger experience.
To help cope with the seasonal rush, Luxairport has recruited additional staff and modernised the terminal's digital information screens. The changes are intended to streamline processes and make travelling through the airport more comfortable.
"We completely renewed the terminal's information screens to provide clearer communication for passengers", said João Fernandes, Head of Operations at Luxairport. The new displays help travellers quickly find key information, including their flight, check-in desk, and boarding gate.
He explained that the airport has also introduced a dedicated preparation area where passengers can organise their liquids before passing through security. Meanwhile, new electronic gates have been installed ahead of the security screening area to speed up passenger flows and improve efficiency, he added.
Looking ahead, Luxairport says expanding Terminals A and B remains a priority. Construction is due to begin next year, with the expansion of Terminal B expected to be completed by the end of 2028, followed by Terminal A four years later.
Luxairport CEO Alexander Flassak said the project is needed to accommodate rising passenger numbers, driven in part by Luxair's growing fleet.
"We're already reaching our capacity limits during peak hours", Flassak said. "The busiest periods are early in the morning, late in the evening, and before 10am. Outside those times, there is still available capacity. It's the peak hours that present the biggest challenge."
Currently, the airport apron can accommodate 27 aircraft at the same time. Once the expansion is complete, that capacity will increase to 53 aircraft.
Luxairport expects passenger numbers to continue growing over the coming decades. While around five million people currently use the airport each year, that figure could exceed 10 million passengers by 2050.
New digital screens providing information on Luxembourg's free public transport network and events across the country have also been installed near the terminal exits. According to Luxairport, the displays respond to passenger demand for more practical travel information.
Additional improvements have also been made in the underground car park, where new information signs have been installed to help drivers navigate and park more easily.
According to Luxairport, all of these improvements form part of its long-term master plan, which sets out continuous upgrades and the expansion of Luxembourg Airport through to 2050.
