For the president of AMMD, there is only one solution, and that is to consider imposing additional measures. While he refrained from naming specific measures, Dr Schmit stressed that Luxembourg's current strategy was no longer suitable for the situation at hand. On Wednesday afternoon the PM and Minister of Health are delivering a press briefing.
Hospitals would not be able to cope with the high number of hospitalisations in the long run, he explained. The situation there is currently very tense. The staff working in the Covid-19 wards were on their last legs. The first wave back in spring had already been stressful, and now healthcare workers were once again forced to work for weeks on end without breaks.
It can be concluded, then, that people still had too much contact with each other, despite the partial lockdown, according to the doctor. However, Dr Schmit also pointed out that people had a personal responsibility to respect social distancing and should not always wait for the government to make decisions. No matter what will be decided on a national level, people should be aware that big family gatherings taking place indoors, where it is nearly impossible to keep a safe distance, are not recommended at the moment, he added.
Especially over the upcoming holidays, people should be aware that the virus is not taking any time off. Each contact with a person outside of one's own household were a risk, Dr Schmit stressed. Particularly due to the very high incidence rate, i.e. the presence of the virus among the Grand Duchy's population. People should keep this in mind while preparing for the holiday season and not wait for the government to pass new measures, Dr Schmit stated.
There are great expectations for the vaccine, but Dr Schmit pointed out that it would not be possible to vaccinate the entire population in a matter of days.
