
Eurostat released its latest provisional data on renewable energy in the EU for 2025. The share of energy from renewable sources in the EU's gross final energy consumption grew from 9.6% in 2004 to 26.2% in 2025. The target for 2030 is set at 42.5%, which would require an average annual increase of 3.3 percentage points from 2025 to 2030.
Among all EU countries, Sweden takes the lead, with 65.4% of its gross final energy consumption coming from renewable sources. This was achieved through the use of solid biomass, hydropower, and wind energy. Finland (53.0%) comes second, relying on the same resources, while Denmark (48.2%) ranks third, with energy sourced mainly from solid biomass, wind, and biogas.
With the Social Climate Plan put forward to support households and businesses facing rising energy costs, and continued efforts to accelerate more sustainable practices, Luxembourg still ranks as the eighth-lowest country, with only 20.2% of its gross final energy consumption coming from renewable sources.
When looking at gross electricity consumption in the EU, 49.9% came from renewable sources. This marks an increase of 2.4 percentage points from 2024 and 34 percentage points since 2004. Austria takes the lead with 90.8%, closely followed by Sweden with 89.2%, while Denmark ranks third with 77.7%. Luxembourg ranked among the bottom three, with 23.3%, ahead of Czechia (19.2%) and Malta (11.2%).
The use of renewable energy sources in heating and cooling also increased across the EU. The share reached 27.4% in 2025, compared with 26.7% in 2024 and 11.7% in 2004. This marks an increase of 0.7 percentage points from the previous year, slightly below the average annual increase of 0.75 percentage points recorded between 2004 and 2025.
