The large association held its national congress in Roodt-sur-Syre on Sunday.

Members took advantage of the event to remind politicians that the association was still looking for a piece of land where they could build a new modern headquarters. This new building could also be used as an educational centre by schools, president Martine Mergen added.

Both primary and secondary schools could in fact profit. The students would, among other things, be able to learn more about sustainability and pesticide-free soil cultivation.

The building the association had in mind should therefore also have a positive energy balance. Even if a concrete plan is still missing, ideas abound.

The current headquarters of the associations sits in Bonnevoie but the members would readily trade it for a greener piece of land. In a related vein, they hope that the new building would be surrounded by gardens.

The association should have decent chances of getting its will - after all, it boats 20,000 members and has a long history. During the congress, the association thanked several long-term members for their dedication. Those who had been members for 67 years received an honorary rose.

Representatives are mostly elderly citizens but the association hopes to get the younger generation more involved as well. As Mergen explained, the association can also help young people receive an allotment garden.

For this reason, she argued, local municipalities should support "Home and Garden" by turning empty lands into collective gardens - at least until building works begin. A garden is, after all, synonymous with quality of life.

Politicians are willing to help and hand out subventions, the president of the association explained. In this context, a large garden exhibition will also take place in Luxembourg City in 2023.

"Garden and Home" is an association that has a long tradition and that stands for sustainability, biodiversity and quality of life.
