Parliamentary questionMinister weighs in on Sandweiler town hall referendum

RTL Today
Minister of the Interior Taina Bofferding has advised the municipal council of Sandweiler to allow a referendum to take place on the future of the town hall building.

In response to a parliamentary question posed by LSAP MP Cécile Hemmen, Bofferding said she would advise Sandweiler aldermen to allow the residents' referendum to proceed unconditionally.

The topic of the referendum is the planned demolition of the municipality's town hall. The opposition parties in the local council, the DP and the LSAP, have criticised the decision and collected more than 500 signatures from residents wishing to make their opinion on the matter heard. This meets the minimum threshold to conduct a consultative referendum.

However, the petition's authors are no longer in agreement on the purpose of the signature collection. The LSAP said they believed a referendum should be organised, while the DP disagreed, along with the alderman college of Sandweiler.

In her parliamentary response, Bofferding recommended the municipality take the opinions of its residents into account. She also criticised  the legal framework for municipal referendums, saying it was awash with obscure and incomprehensible elements and was in dire need of reform.
