Andriy Melnyk was the former leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), and had lain buried in Bonnevoie alongside his wife Sofia for 61 years. Last week's exhumation came at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who described the couple as emblematic Ukrainians.
Melnyk and his wife were reburied on Monday at the National Military Cemetery near Kyiv. During the Second World War, Melnyk collaborated with Nazi Germany, which he regarded as an ally against the Soviet Union. Several members of the OUN are also said to have taken part in the persecution of Jews in Ukraine.
One of the arguments Russian President Vladimir Putin has used to justify the war in Ukraine is so-called de-Nazification. No representatives of the Luxembourg government attended last week's exhumation. The Luxembourg Foreign Ministry confirmed that its ambassador was summoned in connection with it.
