"Castle burning"Municipalities only authorised to burn natural wood for Buergbrennen

In a press release published earlier on Tuesday, the Ministry of the Environment reiterated that municipalities are only allowed to burn natural wood during the traditional "Buergbrennen" events.

It is prohibited to burn any form of waste, processed wood, furniture, or chemically processed wooden pallets for the popular banishment of the winter months.

The ministry also advised against the use of gasoline or any other artificial firelighters to set the "castles" ablaze.

Traditionally, Buergbrennen takes place on "Buergsonndeg" ("castle Sunday"), which falls on 10 March this year.
