
This means that people will soon be able to go to their local town halls to sign the respective petition. The Ministry of State has to communicate the dates of the signing period within eight days after approving the request.
Emile Eicher, president of the Union of Cities and Municipalities in Luxembourg (Syvicol), commented: “In each town, people have to be informed about the exact procedures so that they know when, where, and how to sign the petition.”
Although the document can be accessed online, municipalities will also have a copy of the text so that people can familiarise themselves with the issue before signing. Eicher explained that people will also be checked to see if they are eligible to sign the petition.
After the signing period has ended, municipalities have to send their results back to the Ministry of State. If at least 25,000 signatures are gathered, a referendum has to take place within six months. Eicher voiced concerns over the process, given that many municipalities have little experience in terms of referenda.
