It was a mere formality, after the party announced last week that Claude Haagen would be succeeding Romain Schneider as Minister for Agriculture and Social Security, and Georges Engel would be taking over from Dan Kersch as Minister for Labour and Sports.

Paulette Lenert will be taking over as Deputy Prime Minister. For her, this new challenge is something she is looking forward to, even if she has already been very involved in her current role.

“I am already taking part in the government council every week. But Deputy Prime Minister is a more central role, which also encompasses communication with the parliamentary group and the party. [...] I just wish that the current crisis will be over fairly soon.”

Corona will also be influencing the work of Claude Haagen as Minister for Social Security. But Agriculture, too, is a fraught department in Luxembourg. Uniting this European level with the concerns on the ground is important to him, he says.

Georges Engel assures us there will be no great changes with his entrance into the Ministry for Labour. Hot topics such as the right to disconnect, remote work and the ITM will keep him busy. Before taking on his new role, he will spend some time with LSAP president Yves Cruchten, who will succeed him in his current role as head of the parliamentary group.
