The official name is Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, but everyone knows it as the “Rout Bréck” (red bridge) due to its iconic colour. Built between 1962 and 1965, the steel bridge has only been repainted once before, in 1989.

The works are expected to finish by late spring 2023. After initial difficulties - the original contractor went bankrupt, then the pandemic caused further delays - the works have now beeng ongoing since December 2020. There are not many companies fulfilling all the prerequisites to do the job.

A specialised firm from Belgium got the contract. They will need 50 tons of paint for the 50,000 square metre surface. Around a dozen people are working inside the metal structure. The bridge is made of 13 sections, with 3 remaining to be done. The colour used is called “Kaminrot” (chimney red). It is the same colour that was used in 1966 and it should resist fading for the next ten years.
