The address 13, rue de Bitbourg in Hamm is now home to a number of government services. These include the National Employment Agency (Adem), the Health Directorate, the Ministry of Family Affairs and the Greater Region, as well as the National Office for Social Inclusion.
But these aren't the only ministries or administrations whose premises were no longer adequate, and so there are a bunch more moves planned over the next few months.
The Ministry of Defence will relocate from the city centre to Rond-Point Sierra on Kirchberg, followed by the Ministry of Justice, currently housed in the Chamber of Commerce.
The Ministry of the Civil Service and its training centre will move from the Gare quarter to Place de l'Europe on Kirchberg. However, these premises will first have to be renovated after being vacated by European institutions.
A decision has finally been made about the old National Library and the "Kolléisch" on rue Notre Dame in the city centre, which are listed buildings.
Minister François Bausch explains: "We want to use the second and third floors for the commercial courts. But it's important to me to insert some life into the ground floor, especially as it has a beautiful interior court with a protected tree. We intend to turn this into a shared space and put a restaurant and a brasserie in the building. There will be a call for tender for this."
The planned National Gallery will therefore no longer be housed next to the cathedral, but in the listed industrial former Arbed buildings in the new "Neischmelz" quarter in Dudelange. The film studio project originally planned for this site has been dropped.
In Diekirch, the army infrastructure on Härebierg will see further modernisation. Solar panels will be installed on the roofs and should produce over 60% of the power needed on site.
