A trial concerning a violent attack and burglary on an elderly couple in December 2008 ended on Thursday.

The trial, which concerned the burglary and attack on the elderly couple in their apartment in Bereldange, ended with four sentences and an acquittal.

The five defendants stood accused of having attacked and hit their victims, as well as threatened them at both knife and gunpoint, and making off with jewellery and money.

Whilst the prosecutor had called for sentences ranging between seven years prison with a possible suspended sentence and a full sixteen year prison term, the judges decided to acquit one of the defendants and sentence the others to various prison terms with the maximum being ten years.

The one defendant who had not been present at the burglary, but, according to the prosecutor, was the brains behind the planned attack, was acquitted.

As for the other defendants, two were sentenced to ten years prison each. A third defendant received an eight-year prison sentence, five years of which as a suspended sentence, and a fourth defendant was given a five year suspended prison sentence. The four guilty parties must also pay the elderly woman €15,000 in damages and a further €10,000.

The lawyer of one of the defendants sentenced to ten years of prison protested his client's jail term, which makes it likely that he will appeal the verdict.
