Ahead of Halloween, Luxembourg police are urging the public to prioritise safety as the holiday grows in popularity across the country. To ensure a secure environment for both revellers and non-participants, authorities have issued a series of safety guidelines and announced an increased police presence throughout the night.
Authorities are also calling for mutual respect between those celebrating and those not participating in the festivities.
General safety advice
Large public gatherings can attract opportunistic criminals. Police advise heightened vigilance over the Halloween weekend and recommend the following preventative measures:
- Keep bags and personal belongings secure, and never leave them unattended.
- Remain alert in crowded areas, such as queues.
- Store wallets in inside jacket pockets to deter pickpockets.
- Be wary of strangers initiating physical contact, a common tactic used to distract victims while stealing phones or wallets.
- Never leave drinks unattended to prevent spiking.
- Do not drink and drive, as alcohol remains a leading cause of severe traffic accidents.
- Motorists should exercise caution, reduce their speed, and remain highly vigilant for pedestrians, particularly children.
Safety for children
Halloween is especially popular among children, with fancy dress and trick-or-treating central to the festivities. However, authorities remind parents to prioritise pedestrian safety:
- Young children should be accompanied by an adult. Older children should be briefed on road safety before going out independently.
- Trick-or-treat in groups whenever possible.
- Use pavements at all times. If no pavement is available, walk facing oncoming traffic.
- Cross streets only at intersections or zebra crossings.
- Both children and accompanying adults should be highly visible.
- Carry a torch as an additional light source.
- Approach only homes where the lights are on.
The public is reminded to call the police emergency line at 113 to report any suspicious individuals, unattended objects, or incidents requiring immediate intervention.
