Joint Luxembourgish and Romanian police patrols have been roaming Luxembourg City and several other municipalities since 7 May. Two officers from the Poliția Română have been offering support from the capital's main police station.

The aim of this cooperation is to collect information to be passed on to the justice system, particularly in relation to human trafficking and organised begging. The mission will last six months, but may be extended. It is based on the Prüm Convention for cross-border cooperation, in particular accords signed on 5 March 2026.

The patrols will use French as their primary language. The Romanian officers will wear their own national uniform and are unarmed. Their deployment is strictly limited to emergency and defence situations by law.

Prior to embarking on patrols, the officers familiarised themselves with local structures and procedures.

The Prüm Convention, dating back to 2005, aims to strengthen cross-border cooperation between European countries, combating issues such as terrorism, organised crime and illegal immigration.
