Traditionally, Luxembourg police mark the start of the new school year with an increased presence in areas around schools, in order to encourage safe practices for children and parents on the school run.

Although the campaign targets all road users, it notes that pedestrians and cyclists are particularly vulnerable. Children especially are at risk due to their smaller size, height, limited experience and susceptibility to distraction.

The school run during the autumn term often takes place at the darkest times of day in the early morning or late afternoon, adding another element of risk on the road. The campaign seeks to make children and young people aware of the dangers of the road, as well as advising them on how to increase their visibility in the depths of winter.

As part of the 2021/2022 campaign, the police have joined with the Ministry of Education to hand out over 7,000 reflective safety vests to children in cycle 2.1, starting 17 September. The vests are accompanied with a letter for the child’s parents, as well as an image for the child to colour in. The Grand Ducal police have advised that the children should be encouraged to wear the vests on their way to and from school, particularly when visibility is low due to darkness or inclement weather.
