PoliceShoplifter assaults staff in Luxembourg City, muggings in Sandweiler and Bettembourg

Luxembourg's police reported several incidents on Wednesday.

A member of staff at a grocery store in the capital was injured at around 4pm on Wednesday afternoon, following an altercation with a thief. The suspect in question was in the process of stealing bottles of alcohol, and assaulted the employee when the latter attempted to stop him.

The thief, who was said to be intoxicated, tried to make his escape but was arrested by police on Avenue de la Gare. He refused to cooperate with staff at the police station and attempted to injure two police officers. Charges of bodily harm, rebellion against police officers, and theft were all brought against the suspect. He was also made to spend the night in a cell to sober up.

Visually-impaired man mugged in Sandweiler

Two thieves stole money from a man using a cashpoint on Rue Principale on Wednesday. The suspects observed the victim making the transaction and noticed that he had poor eyesight. They took advantage of this fact to steal the man’s card, as well as the cash he had withdrawn, before performing a second cash withdrawal at the machine.

Witnesses said the men were of North African origin, and both wearing face masks and black baseball caps. One had black hair reaching his ears, a beard, dark eyes and a black jacket. The second was said to be around 1.8 metres tall. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Bettembourg mugging

A pedestrian on Rue Klensch was assaulted and mugged on Wednesday at around 4pm. The perpetrator grabbed the victim from behind and tore the victim’s necklace from their throat.

An accomplice was waiting nearby in a car, enabling the thief to flee the scene quickly. The victim was reported to be uninjured, but suffering from shock. Police have launched an investigation.
