The Ministry of Education launched a survey on 30 March, aimed at teachers and parents of pupils, with a view to gaining feedback on their experiences of home learning after schools were suspended on 16 March.

Over the course of two days, more than 17,000 people - 4,265 educators and 12,945 parents - participated in the survey.

The Ministry reported that overall, a large majority of teachers and parents were coping well with home learning and were able to manage the situation.

87% of parents who replied to the survey said they had been able to manage the challenge posed by the new learning situation.

The publication of the survey's results follows the news on Wednesday that schools would not reopen again until 4 May, with Minister of Education Claude Meisch due to provide further details at a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

FEW COMPLAINTS

13% of parents said they had experienced difficulties with home education, with 50% citing a lack of time, 33% a lack of knowledge, 9% a lack of computer equipment and 8% a lack of information.

According to the survey, pupils are averaging around 3.6 hours of work a day, with parents investing around 2.3 hours per day to support their studies.

The situation has triggered an increase in efforts to digitise learning where possible, with the majority of teachers using digital tools to communicate with pupils and parents.

According to the teachers' responses, more than 90% have made use of email or other digital platforms.

56% of teachers have also been working in teams to exchange experiences and organise distance education in the best possible conditions.

The Ministry said over 7,000 comments and suggestions were made by teachers and parents when answering the survey, which will be taken into account when planning for the coming weeks.
