The reason: a "significant" proliferation of cyanobacteria, more commonly known as "blue algae".

"The toxins produced by these cyanobacteria can be dangerous for humans, aquatic fauna, domestic animals, and livestock," the Ministry explained in a statement sent to the press on Tuesday. Contact with the algae can lead to various symptoms, including headaches, rashes, and nausea.

The Water Management Authority stated that if people who have previously bathed in the lake experience health problems, they should consult a doctor.

It is therefore no longer advisable to bathe in the lake or allow dogs or other pets to drink from it. Fish caught in the lake are also no longer fit for consumption.

On the other hand, the Ministry specified that there is no risk that the drinking water sourced from the Upper Sûre reservoir may be contaminated. The water is sourced from a depth of 25 meters, where blue algae particles are practically never found.

The lakes in Remerschen ("Baggerweier") have also been subject to a bathing ban since 25 August. Swimming is still allowed in the lake of Weiswampach.
