Shortly after 5pm, an electrical transformer caught fire at the Cattenom nuclear power plant, near reactor 3.

According to an official statement, the flames were quickly brought under control by an automatic extinguishing system. Fire crews from Thionville, Hayange and Sierck-les-Bains responded to the scene with six vehicles.

There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. No radioactivity was released, since the transformer sits outside the nuclear zone of the facility.

Officials on the ground stated that there was no risk to the general population.
