A metre-long asteroid disintegrated in the skies above northern France on Sunday evening.

Amateur astronomers were up before dawn to witness the spectacle, as a visible shooting star appeared above the northern French town of Le Havre at around 4am.

The object was detected by the European Space Agency and given the name “Sar2667".
