Diesel and E10 petrol were mixed up at the filling station next to the Bungert supermarket in Wittlich, Germany this week following an error during a fuel delivery.
A number of motorists subsequently reported problems with their vehicles, including juddering, unusual engine noises, and damage to the fuel system.
According to those responsible for the station, the delivery crew connected the hoses to the wrong underground tanks while refilling them. As a result, diesel was pumped into the petrol tank and petrol into the diesel tank.
The affected pumps were taken out of service and the contaminated fuel has since been completely removed. The tanks are now being cleaned before being refilled.
Any damage caused by the mix-up will be covered by the fuel supplier's insurance.
It is not yet clear how many vehicles may have been affected. Customers who believe they filled up with contaminated fuel are being asked to report the incident to info@bungert-online.de and provide as much information as possible, including their receipt, the time they refuelled, and details of their vehicle.
Anyone who suspects they may be affected should avoid starting the engine if possible and contact a garage immediately. Drivers who may have put petrol into a diesel vehicle are particularly advised not to start the car, as doing so could cause further damage.
