A serious accident involving a bus carrying German schoolchildren occurred overnight on a Dutch motorway, leaving several injured.

A bus transporting two school classes from Germany was involved in a major crash in the early hours of Monday on the A28 motorway near Wezep, close to Zwolle in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands, according to local police. The vehicle was carrying a total of 54 pupils and four teachers from Schönberg, in Schleswig-Holstein.

Police report that a delivery van was also involved in the incident, which took place around 4.20am. Eight people were taken to hospital, some of them suffering serious injuries. Three others sustained minor injuries. Among those hurt was the driver of the delivery van, police confirmed.

The Probstei Comprehensive School in Schönberg stated on its website that the two Year 12 classes were en route to Paris at the time of the accident. According to the school, there is currently no indication that anyone suffered life-threatening injuries. All parents have been informed, and emergency support is being provided by the fire brigade.

The motorway was temporarily closed in both directions to allow emergency services to respond and conduct investigations.
