The German Bundestag voted on Friday to introduce a fuel tax discount, which was swiftly approved by the Federal Council on the same day. From 1 May, taxes on petrol and diesel in Germany will be reduced by 17 cents per litre, at a cost to the German state of around €1.6 billion. The measure is expected to remain in place until the end of June.

The move comes in direct response to the war in Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, both of which are continuing to push fuel prices higher across the EU. While prices have dipped slightly on occasion, they remain significantly above pre-conflict levels.
