
The US ultimatum expires at 2am (local time), and hopes for a ceasefire are diminishing. Donald Trump further intensified his rhetoric toward Iran and its ruling regime on Tuesday afternoon. On Truth Social, the US president wrote that a “whole civilization” would be wiped out overnight and never return. He said he did not want that outcome, but that it would likely happen. Forty-seven years of extortion, corruption and death would come to an end, Trump added.
Because of these threats, Iran has cut off direct contact with the United States, although talks through mediators aimed at a ceasefire are continuing, according to The Wall Street Journal. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer described Trump as an “extremely sick person” and called on Republicans to step in. Influential right-wing podcaster Tucker Carlson also claimed that US officials are opposing any attempt by Trump to launch large-scale attacks on Iranian civilisation.
