King Haakon VIII of Norway was formally sworn in as the country's new monarch on Tuesday shortly after 1pm, taking the oath before the Norwegian parliament and pledging to uphold the constitution and serve the people. His wife, Queen Mette-Marit, was unable to attend the ceremony as she is still recovering from a lung transplant.
"I promise and swear to govern the Kingdom of Norway in accordance with its constitution and laws. May the almighty and all-knowing God help me" said Haakon VIII, who became king on Friday following the death of his father, King Harald.
From 2pm on Tuesday, the late King Harald's coffin will lie in state at the palace chapel in Oslo, where members of the public will be able to pay their respects over the next week. The official funeral is scheduled for 9 September 2026.
