The protest drew more than 5,000 people. Sixteen were taken into police custody after the unrest.

The six men, aged between 19 and 52, faced charges including violence against police officers, property damage and taking part in the violent disturbances.

One of them was a 25-year-old entrepreneur who runs a company with six employees in Luxembourg. He admitted smashing the window of a clothing shop, stealing garments and intending to resell them online. The court gave him a six-month suspended prison sentence and a €1,200 fine.

Another defendant, aged 50, had threatened to kill four police officers while under the influence of alcohol. He received an eight-month suspended prison sentence and 105 hours of community service, and must pay compensation to the four officers.

Further suspects are expected to face trial in the coming days in connection with the disturbances.
