New rules for the textile industry come into force in the European Union (EU) from Sunday. They apply specifically to unsold clothes and shoes, which can no longer be thrown away or destroyed, as has often been the practice at large corporations. Instead, companies must now either give the goods away or sell them at lower prices.
The EU is targeting "fast fashion" in particular. Between 4% and 9% of unsold goods in the EU are estimated to end up in landfills or incinerators.
