A large sinkhole appeared in Shanghai's Minhang District, engulfing a large section of road and causing damage to nearby structures.

A large sinkhole opened up in Shanghai’s Minhang District, swallowing a section of roadway and damaging nearby structures. Visuals from the scene match the area’s road layout, buildings and surrounding trees seen in file and satellite imagery.

In a dramatic video filmed from a nearby building, the immense size of the hole can be seen, with heavy machinery and sections of road dragged inside.

Local authorities cordoned off the site following reports of a water leak at a nearby construction project on the Jiamin Line. Satellite images from the morning of 11 February show no visible collapse, while imagery from 12 February appears to capture the sinkhole.

The incident came a day after workers detected a leak during excavation work for the Jiamin Metro Line. No injuries were reported.

The road has been closed to traffic.

With Lunar New Year celebrations quickly approaching, Chinese authorities were urged to secure the site and undertake urgent repairs to restore traffic flow into Shanghai.
