According to the German Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) portal "warnung.bund.de", parts of the Bitburg-Prüm district may currently be blanketed by a smell of fire or smoke. The reason lies in a number of forest and vegetation fires now active in the Eifel district. The official German warning page states that this can lead to an "odour nuisance or even smoke inhalation".

That does not necessarily mean there is a fire in the immediate vicinity, but rather that the smell and smoke can be carried through the air over a considerable distance. Even so, the German authorities are also urging residents to keep an eye out for fires or smoke in their own surroundings, since with the current temperatures and drought conditions such incidents cannot be ruled out.

On social media, meanwhile, many people on the Luxembourg side of the border have reported picking up a smell of smoke. This is also apparent from the map published by the BBK. On the Luxembourg side, the regions along the Our and Sauer (Sûre) rivers, roughly between Untereisenbach and Echternach, are the most affected.
