ONE MILLION USERS – A data breach at gym chain, Basic-Fit, has exposed bank details of around one million members across six countries. The company confirmed that hackers had gained unauthorised access to its systems in France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, where the company is headquartered. Basic-Fit confirmed that all affected members have been notified and sought to offer some reassurance, stating that no passwords were compromised and that the company does not store members’ identity documents.

SOCIAL SECTOR AUDIT – A special report from the Court of Auditors has laid bare significant shortcomings in the oversight of Luxembourg’s contracted sector, specifically the operating costs incurred by ministries under the Occupational Health Association for the Tertiary and the Financial Sector (ASTF) law, which governs financial agreements between the state and approved managers carrying out social, family, and therapeutic activities on its behalf. The bulk of the agreements examined were created by the Ministry of Education, including those covering crèche operators.

POLICE – An attempted robbery escalated into a violent assault in a store on Place Guillaume in Luxembourg City on Sunday evening. According to police, a security guard was injured with a syringe during the incident. The suspect, who had allegedly attempted to steal items from the premises, turned on staff when challenged, injuring the security guard’s hand with the syringe. The security guard was taken to hospital and the suspect was taken into custody.

ABUSE IN SCHOOLS – A court in France has given a teacher a suspended one-year jail sentence for bullying an 11-year-old pupil who later took her own life in 2019. The ruling, handed down on appeal, also permanently bans the teacher from the profession and marks a rare conviction in such cases. Prosecutors said the teacher repeatedly humiliated and targeted the child, while the victim’s family welcomed the verdict as recognition of abuse in schools.

CORRUPTION & EMBEZZLEMENT – The wife of the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been charged with corruption after years of investigation, according to a court ruling published on Monday. The case centers on the creation and management of a chair at Madrid’s Complutense University that was co-directed by Gomez, as well as the alleged use of public resources and personal connections to advance private interests. Gomez was formally charged with embezzlement, influence peddling, corruption in business dealings and misappropriation of funds, the ruling added.

SIX PERCENT – Sales at the world’s leading luxury group, LVMH, fell six percent in the first quarter of the year as the war in the Middle East depressed business in the region. The company, best known for Louis Vuitton handbags, Dior fashion, Moet & Chandon champagne, and Tiffany jewellery, registered 19.1 billion euros ($22.4 billion) in sales in January through March. LVMH’s chief financial officer, Cecile Cabanis, told analysts it is still unclear what the final impact of the war will be. “What we know, is that wealth hasn’t evaporated,” she said.

POPE V. PRESIDENT – Donald Trump’s bitter public feud with Pope Leo XIV over the Iran war, has drawn criticism from allies and religious conservatives. The clash, sparked by Trump’s attacks, and the pope’s condemnation of US policies on Iran and immigration, risks undermining Republican support ahead of key midterm elections. Leo had earlier this month branded Trump’s threat to destroy a “whole civilization” in Iran as “truly unacceptable.” He has also previously criticised Trump’s mass deportation campaign as “inhuman.”

FOOTBALL – A new trial over the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona begins today a year after a scandal involving a judge caused the first trial to collapse. Maradona, considered one of the world’s greatest players ever, passed away in November 2020 at the age of 60 while recovering from brain surgery at a private residence. He died of heart failure and acute pulmonary edema - a condition where fluid accumulates in the lungs - two weeks after going under the knife.

Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick blasted referee Paul Tierney for sending off Lisandro Martinez in Monday’s 2-1 defeat against Leeds. Martinez was dismissed in the second-half at Old Trafford after the United defender pulled the hair of Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Tierney showed the Argentine a red card after VAR officials told him to consult the pitch-side monitor.

FIGURE SKATING Japan’s Olympic and world silver medallist Yuma Kagiyama said he would take a break from competitive figure skating next season “to reflect on myself as I look toward the future”. Kagiyama finished runner-up behind Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shaidorov at the Milan-Cortina Games in February and picked up silver again at last month’s world championships in Prague. The 22-year-old, who also won Olympic silver at the 2022 Beijing Games, said on social media that he had “decided to take a break from competing” during the 2026-27 season.
