US MIDTERM REACTIONS – Luxembourg politicians have reacted to the results of the US midterm elections. Foreign minister Xavier Bettel says Donald Trump must now compromise, or risk becoming a "lame duck". Bettel says the result is a sign to Europe that it is worth fighting against extreme positions and discrimination.

The LSAP's Yves Cruchten says Europe must stand on its own two feet, because America First policy will continue. The CSV's Laurent Zeimet called the result good news, and said it shows American democracy works.

INFLATION FORECAST – Statistics agency STATEC has warned that inflation will stay higher for longer due to high energy prices, targeting 2.5% until 2028. Government support measures will ease pressure next year, potentially delaying wage indexations. However, two indexations are currently forecast: one in mid-2027 and another in mid-2028.

GOODYEAR INVESTIGATION – The investigation into faulty Luxembourg-made Goodyear truck tyres in France is moving forward. Sophie Rollet, whose husband died in a crash caused by a burst tyre in 2014, says the investigating judge in Besançon told her the inquiry could conclude as early as 2027. Goodyear's appeals over documents seized in Luxembourg have slowed the process. The company has faced charges, including involuntary manslaughter, since May 2025.

FRANCE CYBERATTACKS – A cyberattack on France's national blood service has altered refrigeration settings at several sites. It comes amid a wider wave of attacks on supermarket refrigeration systems in at least six European countries, including Luxembourg. Authorities have not established whether they are linked, or who is behind them.

UKRAINE WAR – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says 40 people are confirmed dead after a Russian strike on a school in Komyshuvakha on Monday. More than 30 others are feared trapped under the rubble. He accused Russia of repeated war crimes. Ahead of talks in Abu Dhabi next week between Russian, Ukrainian and American working groups, Zelensky says negotiations must move forward quickly to end the war.

He says Ukraine is ready to take the necessary steps, and called last night's call with US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner constructive.

US MIDTERMS – Republicans are looking for answers after the Democrats won a majority in both chambers of Congress in the midterms. Vice President JD Vance has blamed the Iran war and high fuel prices for the defeat. President Trump, however, says he would attack Iran again. Some party strategists are calling for a change of course in foreign policy.

HONG KONG SENTENCE – Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong has been sentenced to ten more years in prison for colluding with foreign powers. Wong, a leading figure in the 2014 Umbrella Movement, has already spent almost six years behind bars. He is now not due for release until late 2036.

FOOTBALL – Liverpool's perfect start to this season's Champions League is over. They lost 3-2 at Fenerbahce in Istanbul last night. Como thrashed Lens 9-1 in France. Real Madrid came from behind to win 3-2 at AEK Athens. Arsenal won 2-1 at Slavia Prague, and Manchester City won 3-2 at RB Leipzig, thanks to a late Erling Haaland goal. Elsewhere, Porto beat Napoli 4-1.

Carlo Molinari, the long-serving former president of French football club FC Metz, has died at the age of 93, the club today announced. Molinari first took on the role of club president in 1967, having already played as a youth for the 'Grenats'.

TENNIS– Top seed Alexander Zverev has crashed out of the Paris Masters on his first outing as world number one, losing in straight sets to Lorenzo Musetti. Novak Djokovic also went out, beaten in three sets by Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata. Carlos Alcaraz won his opening match.
