FRIEDEN IN KYIV – Prime Minister Luc Frieden joined European leaders in Kyiv to discuss further support for Ukraine. Frieden travelled to the city yesterday for a Coalition of the Willing meeting, alongside UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham on his first foreign trip. In his address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on his allies to give Ukraine everything it needed in order to bring the war with Russia to an end.
MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE – A 26-year-old man has been charged following the death of a teenager in a hit-and-run in Kayl on Saturday night. The man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, as well as failing to stop and report an accident, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failing to assist a person in danger. The public prosecutor's office underlined the gravity of the offences committed by the accused, above all due to his failure to stop after the collision and his lack of concern for the victim.
STEEL ACCIDENT – Police have confirmed that three steel bars fell from a crane at a height of 60m at the ArcelorMittal Kirchberg construction site on 12 August. As a result of the workplace accident, those who were inside the European Convention Centre at the time were evacuated as a precaution. No one was injured in the incident. Alongside the police, the Inspectorate of Labour and Mines (ITM) was also notified.
TORNADO – A tornado tore through the village of Pomas in southwestern France yesterday, injuring 41 people and damaging around 300 homes. Fifteen people were taken to hospital, including a pregnant woman injured when her house collapsed. Severe storms also caused power outages and transport disruption, while a stage of the Vuelta a España cycling race was cancelled.
TRADE WAR – Canada is set to announce its response to President Donald Trump’s new tariffs today. The move follows the failure of US-Canada talks to prevent new 50% duties on some Canadian goods. Trump has also threatened to double tariffs on Canadian automobiles to 50%, escalating the trade dispute. After rejecting what he called a "bad deal", Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory tariffs effective from 8 September.
MANGA THEME PARK – France and Saudi Arabia have signed a €6 billion deal to build three theme parks near Paris. The parks will be developed near Cergy-Pontoise, around 30km northwest of the capital. One of the parks is expected to have a manga theme, with the deal signed during Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s recent visit to France. The parks are expected to create 22,000 direct jobs, compared with around 20,000 generated by Disneyland Paris, according to the presidency.
CYCLING – Stage three of the Vuelta a Espana was abandoned inside the final few kilometres because of a dangerous hailstorm yesterday. Riders, including red jersey-wearing race leader Tadej Pogacar, pulled off the road to take shelter in a hotel amid the severe weather conditions in the Pyrenees. Luxembourg's Mats Wenzel and Lorenzo Fortunato had been leading ahead of the peloton when the decision was made.
FOOTBALL – Palmeiras have reportedly agreed a €40 million deal to transfer 22-year-old winger Allan to Manchester City. The move is yet to be formally completed, with the Brazilian club and City having reached a verbal agreement. Allan has impressed this season with four goals and three assists in the Brasileirao, plus three goal contributions in the Copa Libertadores.
TENNIS – Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has appealed her four-year doping suspension to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. She was banned after failing to provide an out-of-competition doping sample in December 2025, but denies ever doping. Her suspension runs until June 2030, with a CAS hearing date yet to be set.
