AIRPORT DISRUPTION – Flight traffic at Findel was briefly suspended yesterday evening after drones were spotted nearby. Lux-Airport halted operations between 9.38 and 10.30pm, resuming shortly before 11pm. Several flights were delayed. It's the second such incident in days after 19 flights were diverted on Friday. Prime Minister Luc Frieden said the government was taking it seriously but has urged calm.
GRAND DUKE IN NY – Grand Duke Guillaume delivers a speech at the 81st UN General Assembly, setting out Luxembourg's positions on today's international challenges, accompanied by Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel. Luxembourg has also signed new partnership agreements with three UN humanitarian agencies - OCHA, the World Food Programme and the Refugee Agency.
BIL BANK SALE – Finance Minister Gilles Roth has confirmed the State will keep its stake in Banque Internationale à Luxembourg (BIL), after the Financial Times reported that Chinese group Legend Holdings had put its 90% holding up for sale, in a deal valuing the bank at €2.5bn. Roth called BIL a systemically important bank in the country.
SPEEDING ACCIDENT– A 22-year-old student drove almost three times over the limit in his Porsche Cayenne, at 86 km/h in a 30 km/h Limpertsberg zone, causing an accident that flipped another car. While the victim suffered lasting medical effects, the prosecution has requested a six-month suspended prison sentence and a vehicle confiscation. The verdict is due 15 October.
UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY – The UN General Assembly opens in New York today, with Secretary-General António Guterres presenting his annual report, followed by addresses from Brazil's President Lula and US President Trump. On the sidelines, Trump meets Britsh Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and holds talks with Ukraine's President Zelenskyy on halting attacks on energy infrastructure. He's also due to meet Venezuela's Delcy Rodríguez and Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Meanwhile, CNN, MS NOW and Politico are suing the Trump administration over their exclusion from the White House press pool.
JAPAN TYPHOON – Typhoon Dujuan has swept past Tokyo, killing two people and triggering landslides and flooding across the region. More than 1.6 million residents were urged to evacuate, hundreds of flights were cancelled, and rail services suspended. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency it is now heading northeast out to sea.
FAT BEAR WEEK – Alaska's iconic Fat Bear Week returns for its 13th year and will run from 22- 29 September. Fans can vote online on which brown bear has piled on the most weight before hibernation. Last year drew over 1.7 million votes from more than 100 countries.
FOOTBALL – Zinedine Zidane has led his first France training session as Les Bleus began preparations for the Nations League. France play Turkey and Belgium away this month, before facing Italy and Belgium at home in October.
Roberto Mancini has said he is eager for a "new adventure" with Italy ahead of the opening game of his second stint as the national team's coach. Mancini led the Azzurri to the Euro 2020 title during his previous spell in charge, but they failed to reach the 2022 World Cup and he resigned the following year to take over the Saudi Arabia national side.
