Netflix's Legends shines a light on one of the more remarkable and lesser-known chapters of Britain's war on drugs, transporting viewers back to Thatcher-era England and the undercover customs officers who infiltrated criminal networks at enormous personal risk. The story itself is compelling enough, but what really sets this series apart is the constant sense of tension. Even when you know roughly where events are heading, the pressure never lets up, with every meeting, phone call and covert operation carrying the threat of exposure.
Created by Neil Forsyth and featuring standout performances from Steve Coogan, Tom Burke, Hayley Squires and Aml Ameen, the series is anchored by an exceptional ensemble. There are moments where some of the performances become a touch too "actorly", with characters occasionally delivering lines that feel more like carefully crafted monologues than natural conversation, but the cast is so strong that these moments rarely pull you out of the drama for long.
The show's biggest weakness is an unusual one. Despite being a tightly structured mini-series, it often feels as though it needed another two episodes. Certain relationships and character arcs are sketched rather than fully explored, and there are occasions where exposition arrives through slightly forced conversations rather than emerging organically. You understand what the writers are trying to communicate, but a little more breathing room would have allowed the emotional stakes to land even harder.
Technically, however, Legends is frequently superb. The period recreation is immersive without becoming showy, there are some genuinely inventive visual flourishes, and the soundtrack does a tremendous job of rooting viewers in the era while maintaining suspense.
By the time the final credits roll, the overwhelming feeling is not only satisfaction but curiosity; the series makes such a strong case for its subject matter that it leaves you wanting to dive straight into the source material.
Intelligent, stylish and consistently gripping, Legends is one of the year's strongest crime dramas. Four stars.
