Luxembourg

OIL RESERVES Luxembourg is releasing around 8,400 tonnes of oil from its strategic reserves, a symbolic gesture of solidarity following a call by the International Energy Agency to help stabilise global oil prices. RTL calculates that Luxembourg’s release amounts to just over one day’s supply, leaving the country with more than 90 days of reserves, the minimum required of EU member states.

FUEL PRICES – After a succession of increases, finally some good news at the petrol pumps as prices for diesel and heating oil have dropped for the first time in days. Diesel has decreased by 4.8 cents while heating oil is dropping by 5.4 cents per litre.

FOOTBALL COACH SACKED Luxembourg’s Football Federation has sacked the women’s national team coach Dan Santos with immediate effect, after he allegedly sent inappropriate messages to several players. The FLF said his conduct went against the values of the federation.

CREMANT ANNIVERSARY – Luxembourg’s Crémant is marking 35 years since receiving its official appellation. What began in 1991 as a quality-focused sparkling wine, produced using the same traditional method as Champagne, has grown into a genuine success story both at home and abroad.

IRAN WAR Oil prices have hit a four-year high as the Iran war enters its second week, with Tehran’s Revolutionary Guards threatening to set Gulf oil and gas fields ablaze.
Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has vowed to keep blocking the Strait of Hormuz and avenge Iranian deaths, as more tankers and cargo ships come under attack in the Gulf.

Explosions are again being reported in Tehran this morning. Meanwhile, a French soldier has been killed and five wounded in a drone attack on a military camp in northern Iraq, a pro-Iranian militia has since claimed responsibility. President Macron called the attack unacceptable, saying the war does not justify targeting French forces.

US ATTACKA 41-year-old man was killed yesterday after ramming his pickup truck into a synagogue on the outskirts of Detroit, Michigan, causing a blaze and triggering a huge police response. US media reported the assailant had recently lost family members in an Israeli strike in Lebanon, as part of the ongoing Middle East war.

LUFTHANSA STRIKE Lufthansa passengers face a second day of disruption as pilots continue their strike over pension disputes, with hundreds of flights cancelled again out of Frankfurt and Munich. Yesterday, over 600 flights were cancelled.

MACRON ZELENSKY MEETING – Ukrainian President Zelensky is meeting French President Macron in Paris today, with talks focusing on tightening sanctions against Russia, targeting the so-called shadow fleet of tankers Moscow uses to dodge existing oil sanctions.

ATHLETICS – Swedish pole vault superstar Armand “Mondo” Duplantis has broken the world record for the 15th time, clearing 6.31 metres at a home meet in Uppsala, Sweden.

STORY TWO – Jonas Vingegaard has won back-to-back stages in the Paris-Nice race, soloing clear after 21-kilometre breakaway on stage five yesterday. The Tour de France champion has warned his rivals he’s not done yet.

FORMULA 1 Chinese Grand Prix weekend in Shanghai and with new rules and new cars, practice sessions get underway today, kicking off a sprint format weekend ahead of Sunday’s race. You can watch the race live on Sunday at 8am on RTL and RTL Play.

FOOTBALL – In the Europa League last night, Porto beat Stuttgart 2-1, Ghent edged Freiburg 1-0, and Aston Villa won 1-0 away at Lille.

Today will be overcast for the entire day; whilst it will be dry in the morning, it looks like the rain will start at around lunchtime and last for the rest of the day, with the temperature only rising to 9–10°C.
