TRIER BIRTHING CENTRE – A birth centre in Trier has been forced to stop using its main delivery room, after a neighbour living just 10m away complained about the noise of women in labour. The man took the matter to court, and the centre agreed to a settlement. The room, which housed the only birthing pool, had been used by 90% of mothers at the centre.

ADR EVENT – The leader of Luxembourg’s ADR party, Fred Keup, has told members the party is ready to win the next elections. Speaking at a party event yesterday, Keup said the current CSV-DP coalition is continuing the left-wing policies of its predecessor, and that ordinary citizens feel increasingly ignored by politicians. The ADR, which won five seats in the 2023 elections, its best result in years, is presenting itself as an alternative.

EU FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETING – EU foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels today to discuss Russia’s war against Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East, and relations with the EU’s southern neighbours. Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel is among those taking part.

World

MIDDLE EAST WAR The war in the Middle East is now into its third week, with no sign of a ceasefire. American and Israeli forces have continued striking targets in Iran, while Tehran has hit back targeting US military bases in the region, as well as locations in and around Tel Aviv and in northern Israel. The UAE says Iranian drones and rockets have again been intercepted, and Dubai’s international airport has been temporarily closed for a second time.

President Trump has warned NATO it faces a very bad future if the alliance doesn’t help the United States secure the Strait of Hormuz, the vital waterway through which much of the world’s oil passes. Trump told the Financial Times that countries which benefit from the route must help keep it safe. He also pressed China to play a role, and spoke with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer about the blockage. Germany has said it will not be taking part.

HUNGARY PROTESTS Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets of Budapest, four weeks before national elections. Supporters of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and those backing opposition leader Peter Magyar both held rallies. Orbán described his rival as a puppet of Brussels and Kyiv. Magyar accused the Prime Minister of inviting Russian agents into the country to silence ordinary citizens.

OSCAR WINNERS – At last night’s Oscars ceremony in Hollywood, the satirical action thriller One Battle After Another won 6 awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson. The American actor Michael B. Jordan was named Best Actor for his role in Blood &Sinners. Irish actress Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for her performance in Hamnet. The Norwegian film Sentimental Value took the prize for Best International Film.

Sport

FORMULA 1 – 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli has taken his 1st Formula 1 victory, winning the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai for Mercedes. Ferrari finished behind them in 3rd.

Formula 1 has cancelled two upcoming races because of the conflict. The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, due to be held on the 12th and 19th of April, will not take place. The FIA confirmed the decision after reports had already been circulating in the media.

FOOTBALL – In the Bundesliga, Stuttgart beat Leipzig 1-0, Union Berlin won 1-0 at Freiburg, and Bremen lost 2-0 at home to Mainz. While in the Premier League, Manchester United beat Aston Villa 3-1, and Liverpool and Tottenham drew 1-1. Barcelona thrashed Sevilla 5-2 in Spain. In Italy, Como beat AS Roma 2-1. And in France, Toulouse won 4-3 away at Metz.

Weather

We can expect showers in the morning, with dry conditions and overcast skies in the afternoon, accompanied by a stiff breeze.

Temperatures will be somewhat chilly, starting at 2-4°C in the morning ,rising no higher than 8-10°C for the rest of the day.
