Luxembourg has pledged humanitarian support to Madagascar following the destructive passage of Tropical Cyclone Gezani, including the deployment of its satellite-based emergency telecommunications system, emergency.lu.

At the request of the European Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) mobilised a team from its Humanitarian Intervention Team (HIT). Two experts departed for Madagascar on 13 February, carrying the equipment required to set up an emergency.lu satellite dish.

The antenna will restore critical communication capabilities in the affected regions, facilitating coordination between European rescue teams and humanitarian organisations on the ground. The mission is expected to last approximately three weeks.

emergency.lu is a public-private partnership involving the Luxembourg government and private sector partners, including SES Telecom Services, Hitec Luxembourg, and Luxembourg Air Ambulance S.A. Mission costs are covered either by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the European Union, depending on the specific operation.
