According to the figures revealed by the Judicial Administration in its publication La justice en chiffres 2019, the number of divorces for a specific reason or an irremediable break-up more than doubled between 2018 and 2019.
In fact, the number of divorces with a definite cause or an irremediable break-up rose from 419 to 1,000 in one year. This spectacular increase can be explained by the entry into force of the law instituting family court judges in November 2018.

A law that has enabled the legal system to "close more cases than under the old procedure" thanks to the "very short" deadlines provided for in the legislation.
As for the number of divorces by mutual consent, it has remained relatively stable although an increase has been recorded this year.
There were 906 divorces by mutual consent in 2019 compared to 811 in 2018. In fact, this is the highest number of consensual divorces of the decade.
As the spokesman for the Judicial Administration confirmed to RTL on Tuesday, 2019 was indeed a "record" year in terms of divorces.
However, he also insisted that the new procedure has a lot to do with it and that a number of divorce applications were pending ahead of the entry into force of the new law on the family court judge.
